The Sport

Balley-Ball is played on a standard beach volleyball court, from 1v1 up to 4v4. Every player holds their own ball. The court, net height and scoring follow standard beach volleyball rules unless a rule below says otherwise.

The core rule

You can only contact the yellow game ball with the ball you are holding. No hands or body contact.

  • Bump it. Hold your ball and use it to strike the game ball directly.
  • Throw it. Release your ball at the game ball to play it higher than you can reach by jumping.

If your thrown ball hits the ground before the game ball, your side loses the point. That stays true no matter what happens to the game ball next.

Teammates can help

In 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4, a teammate can catch your thrown ball before it lands and clear the foul. Catching is a real, coachable Balley-Ball skill, just like bumping and throwing.

Touches

Each side gets three touches, the same as beach volleyball. A serve counts as touch one.

Modes

  • Classic. Every player holds a standard volleyball.
  • Basketball mode. Every player holds a basketball. It is heavier and less bouncy, which changes the timing and throw risk.
  • Exercise ball mode. Every player holds a small exercise or gym ball. It is lighter, easier to throw far and trickier to control on bumps.
  • Mixed mode. One of each ball type is in play across the team or court. Draft or assign them before the match, then adapt your own ball handling to a shared and unpredictable rally.
